Director of Youth Ministries-First United Methodist Church
Job Description


            Character attributes of the person hired as Youth Director were outlined by a committee of youth and parents of the church.  They would like someone who is organized and has a passion for the youth director job.  They also would like someone in whom the youth can have absolute trust and someone who won’t judge, but will provide underlying support for youth. This person should also have a deep faith, be open-minded but grounded in their faith, and possess spiritual maturity.  Someone who has the ability to discipline and has good leadership qualities and who will be a visible part of the church community is desired. It is hoped that the final candidate is someone who has experience, is consistent and is confident in what they know and believe.

The following areas will be the primary focus of the Youth Ministries Director for the First United Methodist Church:

  • Coordinate and oversee youth ministries grade 6-12 at F.U. M. C.

  • Support and serve youth’s needs as appropriate.

  • dentify potential youth for youth group and make initial contact with them to encourage participation.

  • Communicate with all persons involved in the youth program (youth, parents, church community) utilizing bulletin boards, phone calls/emails, monthly newsletter and reminders, bulletin/Messenger.  Organize Quarterly meetings for parents and send them reminders via phone calls, letters, or email.

  • Lead/facilitate the Youth Council.

  • Support Youth Sunday School, grades 6-12, by recruiting teachers and developing, researching and supplying curriculum and program material.  Further, it will include Sunday school teacher recruitment and training.   Attend/fill-in as needed.

  • Coordinate and oversee U.M.Y.F./L.B.S. weekly ministries. This will include items such as curriculum development/activities/devotions  each Sunday evening, coordinating dinner with parent volunteers, parent participation coordination,  and coordination of service projects.

  • Recruit, support, and offer on-going training for all adult volunteers.

  • Participate in Connectional United Methodist youth ministries: local, sub-district, and conference such as Westside Weekend, Youth Leadership Conference, Annual Conference, Missions trips and Core Team Planning Committee.

  • Oversee the planning and implementation of annual youth events i.e, Youth Sunday, mission trip, Church camp, fund raisers, vacation Bible school, Harvest Festival, holiday activities, talent show, lock-ins, retreats, recruitment of new youth.   Participate in Youth Sunday and Mission trips.

  • Represent youth on the church committee which oversees youth programs.

  • Have a vision for the future of a viable, active and growing youth program.

  • Responsibilities and hours for this position may change as the program develops.

Additional Church-related duties:

  • Attend weekly staff meeting.

  • Meet regularly with Senior Pastor.

  • Attend SPR, Finance or other church committee meetings when necessary.

  • Attend Church Council meetings.

  • Provide Youth ministries publicity through the Messenger and bulletin.

The Youth Ministries Director position will be supervised by the Senior Pastor.  Staff Parish Relations Committee will provide a liaison person for the Director of Youth Ministries.

The position will be a 25 hour/week position.
